The West Memphis Three

Been following and reading up on this case for a few years now, ever since seeing the Paradise Lost documentaries. Doesn't take a smart mind to know they were innocent all along. And I couldn't be more overjoyed that these men are finally out, having been in jail for the past 18 years. It's mindblowing just thinking about it. But I admire their true courage and discipline in staying strong and fighting for their freedoms. I wish Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley well and may they find peace and comfort for the rest of their lives. Bear in mind though, this case is not over yet, and let's hope they can all be fully exonerated eventually.

PJ20 Soundtrack Tracklist

A very interesting real (and online) international scavenger hunt has led to the official tracklist being revealed yesterday, following months of eager anticipation. Take note that most of these songs may not be the band's most well-known, but they are supposed to play an important part in their twenty-year history. I'm particularly looking forward to Walk With Me, the Neil Young song (from Le Noise) that was performed at last year's Annual Bridge School Benefit. Rock on, Cameron Crowe!

A loophole in the US Copyright Law...

READ THIS ARTICLE; just a glimpse into how screwed up the music business has always been. The bright side is that this whole affair could possibly spell disaster for the record companies in the near future. It's astonishing that for almost half a lifetime they've been making tons of money off the artists' (or even 'employees', as they are known to those big shots) creativity and hard work. Now the time has come for the artists to take back what is rightfully theirs. Many of the article's comments provide some interesting and important insight into workings of the recording industry.

PJ20 Screening

There's gonna be a lot of screens around the world showing PJ20 come the third week of September....including my country!! Who would've thought, such a tiny little place? Though I won't be surprised if the turnout is low. Isn't this a fabulous time to be a Pearl Jam fan!

Life From Daryl's House

One of the greatest joys in life is watching Daryl Hall's unique web-only show, where each month for the past few years, he and his friends play their favorite songs live, along the way inviting peers, legends and up-and-coming artists for the ride. The results are awe-inspiring. I must confess I haven't been following the series for a year, and only resumed recently; thanks to a YouTube search that yielded the performance of a recent episode of Todd Rundgren and Daryl Hall performing a stunning I Saw The Light. From then on non-stop, it was just clip after clip, episode after episode. There are countless brilliant moments -- The Doors' Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger jamming with the band, Daryl's soulful rendition of You're A Big Girl Now, an emotional but rousing The Weight, in memory of the late T-Bone Wolk, longtime Hall & Oates collaborator (Episode 30), the entire first Christmas episode (featuring John Oates), many many more. And if you want some true blue soul, check out the episode with Smokey Robinson, especially the performances of Sara Smile and Ooo Baby Baby. Musical heaven. Bout time Hall & Oates get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Even Better Than The Real Thing?

This is a continuation from my previous post about the upcoming Achtung Baby box set. I guess I'm gonna have to settle for the Super Deluxe edition. Six CDs and four DVDs. The press release didn't mention if the Achtung Baby and Zooropa albums were remastered. I'm not crazy about discs 3 and 4; Uber Remixes?? The last thing you want is people remixing U2 songs (like in that terrible fan club exclusive Artificial Horizon). Of course Disc 5 is something I gotta have; B-sides and bonus tracks, with rare songs like Satellite Of Love, Heaven And Hell and Lady With The Spinning Head. The last disc is intriguing; "baby" versions of Achtung Baby?? Sounds like work-in-progress demos to me, which is cool.

Now the DVD portions; I think they kinda screwed up on this one. Most fans already own the ZooTv Sydney show. If I'm not wrong, there were couple of other shows from that tour which were pro-shot (Yankee Stadium, Dublin, Stockholm) ; I don't understand why those are not released. Also the music videos from Achtung Baby are included, stuff which fans also own. What I can only hope for now is the blu-ray version of the concert and the bonus material, that'll make the viewing experience much better (seriously, the quality of that Sydney DVD wasn't good at all). Also I wished those two albums (Achtung and Zooropa) would get a blu-ray audio treatment; though it's probably not gonna happen.

I'll still get the set for the 92-page hardcover book and those art prints, and of course the brand new documentary, From The Sky Down. I don't actually own a physical copy of Zooropa, so buying this will complete my U2 album collection. On the other hand, I'm not entirely satisfied with the whole thing; I see lotta missed opportunities here. Don't even compare this to last year's Darkness On The Edge Of Town boxset. Now that was SOMETHING. Give the fans what they want, not what they already have.

P.S. The Uber Deluxe set is RIDICULOUSLY FUCKING EXPENSIVE. Even the new Grateful Dead Europe '72 box set (containing 72 CDs) doesn't cost that much.

'Choose The Cover' Contest Winner

A big congrats to The Sheepdogs, for being the first ever unsigned band to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone! I voted for them every chance I got over the past few months. It's refreshing to finally see a rock & roll group on the fucking cover. The band from Saskatoon will receive a contract with Atlantic Records. Check out below their reactions upon hearing the news.
